There are not many places that can boast of global relevance on 3 drastically different timescales. Today the Yucatán Peninsula is known for world-class snorkeling and indulgent beach vacations, but it’s also the site of a pivotal ancient civilization and carries the mark of one of the most interesting geological events in Earth’s history. I like to think of our tour around the peninsula as a tour through these 3 ages.

… and I wasn’t really planning to tell you about it. We went on a whim; the original plan was Tajikistan but the logistics weren’t working out and Ukraine seemed cheap and interesting. But now the decision feels eerily prescient, as if we knew it wouldn’t be waiting for us in its current form much longer, as if I was aware there would come a more opportune time to reflect on the experience rather than just facing a bout of writer’s block.
Continue reading…In some places, the history provides a backdrop for all the sights, lightly coloring your perspective on everything around you. In others, it hangs so thick you almost have to wade through it like the humidity in the air. Phnom Penh, Cambodia falls in that latter camp.
