… and I wasn’t really planning to tell you about it. We went on a whim; the original plan was Tajikistan but the logistics weren’t working out and Ukraine seemed cheap and interesting. But now the decision feels eerily prescient, as if we knew it wouldn’t be waiting for us in its current form much longer, as if I was aware there would come a more opportune time to reflect on the experience rather than just facing a bout of writer’s block.

In some places, the history provides a backdrop for all the sights, lightly coloring your perspective on everything around you. In others, it hangs so thick you almost have to wade through it like the humidity in the air. Phnom Penh, Cambodia falls in that latter camp.
Continue reading…I can’t swim. I get nervous wading into water above my hips and I’ve never really cared because I think beach water is kind of gross anyway. It’s not chlorinated and you’re surrounded by wild animals that you can’t see (why doesn’t this bother anyone else?). So every time I’ve had the opportunity to snorkel it’s been a hard pass.
