Follow me on my travels

Day-to-day life of long-term travel: a list of things I’ve found myself doing

1) Sleeping in my bathing suit to delay laundry

2) Walking home with rocks in my hands to scare off aggressive street dogs

3) Using a towel as a blanket

We couldn’t figure out how to turn the A/C off and they didn’t give us a blanket

4) Booking a flight less than 24 hours before taking it (or a room 24 hours before sleeping in it)

5) Using a bucket of water to flush my toilet

6) Getting ready in the morning in a KFC bathroom

7) Knowingly sharing a bedroom for days with 2 lizards (which I may or may not have named)

8) Washing my shoes in a tub of mouthwash

Listerine is an officially recommended cleaning agent for Teva shoes

9) Receiving change in merchandise instead of money (e.g. being given an aspirin instead of coins at a pharmacy)

10) Haggling for a covid test

11) Getting on a bus without really knowing where it was going

12) Having a phone conversation with someone by holding up google translate’s “conversation mode” to the speaker

13) Waiting 15 minutes in the hot sun to save $0.75 on taxi fare

14) Eating bugs

Chapuline (grasshopper) fondue

I love this. One of my favorite to date. Really gives texture to the experience of long term travel. What were the lizards names? I’m so proud of you for waiting in the sun to save 75 cents.

I’m so glad you liked it! I feel like you in particular can relate to these. I can’t remember one of the lizards’ names but the other was Lizzie… I know, obvious choice, but Pride & Prejudice is my favorite book so I meant it as a compliment.

I feel for you with no blanket. Somehow you are smiling though. (Who put the hoodie over your feet? Did it last all night?)
“Haggling for a covid test”: This feels really third world. As does the aspirin for change.
It really sounds like an adventure. (The bugs are a little gross). Miss you guys.

Not visible in that picture of me with the towel: pants, long shirt, a beach coverup, and a second hoodie. I was cold but it was also funny (and not the last time I’ve had to do this). I sleep like a log so it was just like that in the morning.

The grasshoppers in the picture look like caramelized onions – mind over matter! We miss you too <3
